Prudence Sekgodiso’s stellar season continues as the World Indoor Champion ran a personal best to win the 800m title on Tuesday, June 24, at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting (Golden Spike) in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The South African track star led from the front but broke away towards the end of the race as she finished in a time of 1:57.16. Not only did Sekgodiso run a personal best, but her race time was also a meeting record.

She was unfazed by her competitors getting closer as she neared the finish line to show why she was the woman to beat in the 800m discipline.

It was a great race for Africa as Oratile Nowe from Botswana was second and broke a national record with her time of 1:57:49. Ethiopia’s Nigist Getachew grabbed the last podium place coming in at 1:58:02. Her compatriot Worknesh Mesele was fourth.

In other noteworthy results, a 42-year-old record was broken as Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser’s winning time of 49.15 in the 400m race saw her topple Tatana Kocembova’s 49.67 record set in 1983.
