African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has paid tribute to the late Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport Planning, Andile Mngwevu, describing him as a courageous leader deeply connected to the people he served.

Mngwevu died after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in Mozambique, a tragedy that has drawn widespread condolences from political leaders and community members alike.

Addressing mourners at Mngwevu’s funeral service held earlier today at the KwaThema Community Hall in Ekurhuleni, Mbalula reflected on a life marked by service, empathy and decisive leadership.

ANC Leadership Honours Andile Mngwevu’s Community Impact

Mbalula told those gathered that Mngwevu’s work and character left a lasting imprint on many lives, both within government and at grassroots level.

“He was unashamed to be moved by people’s stories and unafraid to act when action was required. We also honour the fullness of his roles – husband, father, son, brother, comrade, colleague.

“These identities wove together to form a life that was rich in responsibility and relationships. To his family, we say your grief is ours. We hope you will find comfort in the knowledge that the people he served hold you in their prayers and esteem,” adds Mbalula.

Funeral Service Highlights Legacy of Service in Ekurhuleni

The service brought together family, comrades and community members who remembered Mngwevu as a dedicated public servant whose leadership was rooted in compassion and accountability.

Speakers highlighted his commitment to improving infrastructure and transport planning in Ekurhuleni, noting that his legacy would continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
