Stepping into the commentary box alongside Kass Naidoo was one of those full-circle moments that quietly remind you why you chose this career in the first place.

As a broadcaster, you often listen to commentary from the outside, analysing tone, timing, storytelling, and authority, but being inside the box offered a completely different education.

“Shadowing Kass allowed me to witness, in real time, the precision, preparation, and presence required to deliver world-class commentary.”

    International Cricket Broadcaster, Naledi Aphane

What stood out immediately was the preparation that goes into making the magic of commentary. Kass doesn’t just describe what’s happening; she adds value. Every contribution is informed, intentional, and rooted in deep knowledge of the sport.

For Naledi, witnessing excellence in a traditionally male-dominated space was a deeply affirming moment.

I was particularly struck by the balance she maintains, knowing when to speak, when to listen, and how to elevate the broadcast without overpowering it. Commentary isn’t about filling silence; it’s about enhancing the viewer’s understanding and experience.

Beyond the technical aspects, the experience was deeply affirming. Seeing a woman lead so confidently in a space that has historically been male-dominated reminded me that there is room and demand for voices like ours. Representation matters, but excellence matters more, and Kass embodies both.

“I walked away from the commentary box not only inspired but clearer about the standard I continue to hold myself to.”

Shadowing Kass Naidoo was a privilege and a powerful learning experience, one that has sharpened my perspective on the craft and strengthened my belief that I am exactly where I am meant to be.

Driven by her passion and a clear ‘Why', Naledi continues to sharpen her perspective on the craft of broadcasting.

The advice or tips I would give to up-and-coming sports broadcasters is to start where you are. The internet has become a tool people use to get themselves out there, and most opportunities are also from being visible online.

“Love sports and know your why.”

There are times where you will build and nothing happens; that’s when the passion will keep you going. Finally, have a mentor. Find someone who’s already where you want to be and send them a DM; some may respond, and don’t be offended if some don’t. But do have someone you look up to and try to reach out to them.
