The ANC Women’s League has issued a firm endorsement of President Cyril Ramaphosa as speculation grows within the party about a possible move to recall him from office.

Rumours of a coordinated push to remove Ramaphosa have circulated in recent weeks, with some dissatisfied ANC members allegedly mobilising behind the scenes.

The President reportedly confronted his detractors during an ANC gathering in November, but concerns remain that discontented National Executive Committee (NEC) members may revive efforts to unseat him this week.

In a statement, the ANC Women’s League expressed alarm that certain individuals had ignored established organisational procedures for raising grievances about Ramaphosa’s leadership.

Secretary-General Nokuthula Nqaba said allegations that Ramaphosa has underperformed in office were misguided.

She highlighted what the league views as key achievements under his leadership, including efforts to tackle corruption, the classification of gender-based violence and femicide as a national crisis, and the successful chairing of the G20 presidency.

Nqaba also stressed the importance of adhering to ANC protocol when addressing leadership matters, noting that internal discussions must respect the party’s rules and structures.

Nqaba further clarified that the upcoming NEC meeting does not have the authority to remove a sitting ANC president. She explained that such a decision can only be taken by the National General Council (NGC) or an Elective National Conference (ENC).

The NGC is scheduled to convene in a week’s time, though party leadership has already indicated that the gathering should not be used to fuel factional battles.
