Glynnis Breytenbach has officially been appointed as the new chief whip of the Democratic Alliance in the National Assembly. The party confirmed the appointment on Monday, 18 May 2026.

The position became vacant after George Michalakis was elected as the DA’s parliamentary leader. Michalakis now serves as the link between the party’s caucus and newly elected federal leader Geordin Hill-Lewis.

DA Says Glynnis Breytenbach Will Lead Parliamentary Strategy

Michalakis praised Breytenbach’s experience, saying she would play a key role in managing the DA’s parliamentary operations and negotiations within the Government of National Unity (GNU).

“She will also, alongside myself, be the party’s chief negotiator within the GNU in parliament. Furthermore, she has served for her entire tenure in parliament as the DA’s spokesperson on justice.”

Michalakis added that Breytenbach would serve as the custodian of Parliament’s rules and procedures on behalf of the party. He also said her appointment reinforces the DA’s focus on crime and justice issues.

“Through this, the DA is sending a clear message that safety and security [are] a top priority for us in parliament, in line with Federal leader Geordin Hill-Lewis’ vision,” he said.

Breytenbach Brings Decades Of Legal Experience To DA Role

Breytenbach brings more than a decade of parliamentary experience to the position, along with a lengthy legal career as a senior state prosecutor. Before entering politics, she spent 26 years working for the National Prosecuting Authority.

She will now work alongside Deputy Chief Whip Bax Nodada in overseeing the DA’s parliamentary caucus. This includes responsibility for 13 National Assembly whips, 87 National Assembly MPs and 12 members in the National Council of Provinces.

“I have no doubt that they will make a formidable team. I am joined by the entire caucus in wishing Breytenbach success in this new position,” Michalakis said.

DA Chief Whip Also Serves On Phala Phala Committee

In addition to her new leadership responsibilities, Breytenbach also serves on the parliamentary committee dealing with the Phala Phala impeachment process involving Cyril Ramaphosa.

She currently chairs the Joint Constitutional Review Committee and also serves on the Judicial Service Commission. Breytenbach remains the DA’s main spokesperson on justice and constitutional development matters.

Her appointment is expected to strengthen the DA’s legal and parliamentary strategy within the National Assembly.
