Cape Town’s outdoor community turned out in force last weekend for the 17th edition of the Cableway Charity Challenge on Table Mountain, with runners, hikers and supporters helping raise more than R964 000 for local causes.

While final fundraising totals were still being calculated as final pledges came in, organisers confirmed that the event generated an impressive preliminary amount. Proceeds will benefit four organisations: the SANParks Honorary Rangers, Ubuntu Football Academy, Volunteer Wildfire Services and Wilderness Search and Rescue.

Held on the slopes of Table Mountain, the annual event once again showcased Cape Town’s strong culture of community spirit and adventure. Participants tackled repeated ascents in support of organisations making a meaningful impact across conservation, emergency response and youth development initiatives in the city.

“This event is about more than just crossing a finish line,” said Wahida Parker, Managing Director of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company. “It’s about having a shared goal and a deep sense of wanting to make a difference. We are incredibly grateful to every participant, donor, volunteer and supporter who showed up and contributed.”

The official handover of funds to the beneficiary organisations is expected to take place before the end of May.

Each finisher received a medal crafted from retired track rope cable previously used by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. The rope transported millions of visitors up and down the mountain over more than two decades before being removed during the company’s 2024 maintenance shutdown.

Competition on the mountain was fierce throughout the day. George Nuttall claimed the men’s title after completing the most laps, while Steph van Gelderen took top honours in the women’s category. Team Cometa won the corporate division and Rondebosch Boys’ High School secured victory in the school category.

At just 17 years old, Nuttall matched last year’s record achievement by completing nine laps of the course — equalling the benchmark previously set by Vincent Buter and AJ Calitz.

Several standout performances also drew attention during this year’s challenge. Achmat Jackson completed his 15th Cableway Charity Challenge, marking a milestone that reflects years of endurance and dedication to the event. Meanwhile, AJ Calitz recorded the fastest lap of the day in an impressive 41 minutes and 33 seconds.

Organisers said the continued support for the challenge reflects the city’s passion for outdoor adventure and its willingness to rally behind meaningful causes.
