KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has testified that alleged underworld boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala was working behind the scenes to position one of his close associates as the national police commissioner.

Mkhwanazi made the revelation while testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Thursday, presenting messages retrieved from Matlala’s cellphone.

According to Mkhwanazi, the text messages showed that Matlala was pushing for the arrest and removal of the current National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola.

“The response from Matlala says ‘my person is going to be a national commissioner now’. Mr Van Vyk [his business associate] didn’t understand where Matlala was going with this, but Matlala said ‘it’s a good thing because my personal is going to be a national commissioner now’,” Mkhwanazi explained.

The commissioner told the inquiry that the messages highlight Matlala’s deep interest in the inner workings of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“We are not blaming Mr Van Wyl of anything but are just displaying the levels that Mr Matlala has an interest of what’s happening in the police that he even communicates with his business partners,” Mkhwanazi added.

    Matlala’s Legal Troubles

Matlala is currently locked up for the attempted murder of his former partner, actress Tebogo Thobejane. His name has repeatedly surfaced in allegations of criminal networks attempting to penetrate law enforcement structures.
