Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velekosini Hlabisa, has embarked on a visit to the embattled Ditsobotla Local Municipality in the North West Province.

The visit, taking place on Monday, aims to engage both the municipal council and management following the national government’s decision to assume control of the municipality’s operations.

The intervention follows the re-election of the mayor and the speaker last month, marking a renewed effort to stabilise the Lichtenburg-based municipality after years of administrative and political turmoil.

Focus on Restoring Stability and Service Delivery

During his visit, Minister Hlabisa will hold discussions with the municipality’s leadership to identify urgent priorities aimed at restoring effective governance and improving service delivery.

He is also expected to evaluate the implementation of the financial recovery plan that was put in place to address long-standing fiscal challenges.

For years, the Ditsobotla Municipality has battled severe governance issues, including prolonged salary non-payments, poor service delivery, and allegations of ghost workers on the payroll.

These persistent issues have left residents frustrated and eroded public confidence in local leadership.

As part of his visit, Minister Hlabisa will engage with residents in Coligny to listen to community concerns and assess progress on service restoration initiatives.

The Minister is also scheduled to conclude his trip with oversight inspections at the Boikhutso Storm Water and Itsoseng Road Paving projects — key infrastructure developments aimed at improving living conditions in the area.
