The MK Party is calling for heightened security for members of Parliament serving on the ad hoc committee investigating police corruption, after party alternate member Vusi Shongwe was allegedly kidnapped on Wednesday night.

MK Party chief whip Colleen Makhubele revealed that Shongwe, along with another individual travelling with him, was forced to withdraw a substantial sum of money after the assailants confiscated all three of his phones and issued threats.

“This incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all members of the ad hoc committee,” Makhubele wrote to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza.

    Parliament Urged to Act Quickly

Makhubele emphasised that budgetary constraints should not be used as an excuse to compromise the safety of MPs.

She warned that any delay in addressing these threats could endanger members and expose Parliament to legal and financial repercussions.
