Father General Arturo Sosa has appointed Fr Lawrence
Achal Kyaligonza as the new Provincial of the Eastern Africa Province of the
Society of Jesus. He takes up the new responsibility on 3 December 2026.

Fr Lawrence was born in May 1977 in Kasese, Uganda. He
entered the Society of Jesus in 2002, after studying Economics in Makerere
University. After completing his novitiate in Arusha, Tanzania, he studied
philosophy at Arrupe College in Zimbabwe from 2004 to 2007. He then spent his Regency
serving as Assistant Coordinator for Research and Advocacy at the John Paul II
Justice and Peace Centre in Kampala, Uganda. Following that, he studied
theology at Hekima College in Kenya from 2009 to 2012.

He was ordained a priest in August 2012 and pronounced
his Final Vows on 28 December 2017.

In 2016, he obtained a Master’s degree in Business
Administration from the Carroll School of Business at Boston College. He also
earned a Doctorate in Organisational Leadership from Gonzaga University, USA,
in 2023.

Fr Lawrence has
served in several positions. From 2012 to 2014, he was Assistant Parish Priest
at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Kangemi, Development Office Coordinator,
Province Vocations Coordinator, and Vocation Promoter for Kenya. He also served
as Assistant for Formation from 2016 to 2018, and as Socius to the Provincial
from 2018 to 2020. Currently, he is the Superior of the Alberto Hurtado
Community in Gulu.
