Yaounde, Cameroon – Samuel Eto’o, the illustrious Cameroonian footballer and current president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), has successfully appealed a ban that barred him from participating in the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) executive committee elections. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in his favor, allowing the 43-year-old to stand as a candidate in the upcoming elections scheduled for March 12 in Cairo.

Eto’o’s initial exclusion stemmed from a six-month ban imposed by FIFA in September 2024, following an incident during the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup match between Brazil and Cameroon. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee found Eto’o guilty of offensive behavior and violations of fair play principles, leading to his suspension from attending Cameroon’s national team matches across all categories and age groups.

Despite these challenges, Eto’o’s appeal to CAS has been successful, overturning CAF’s decision and reinstating his eligibility for the executive committee elections. This development allows Eto’o to continue his pursuit of a significant role within African football’s governing body.

Eto’o’s tenure as president of FECAFOOT, which began in 2021, has been marked by both progress and controversy. His leadership has been pivotal in various initiatives aimed at advancing Cameroonian football, though it has also attracted scrutiny due to the aforementioned incidents. The CAS ruling represents a significant legal victory for Eto’o, reaffirming his standing in African football administration.

As the CAF elections approach, Eto’o’s reinstatement as a candidate adds a notable dimension to the proceedings, highlighting the dynamic and often complex nature of football governance in Africa.
