As South Africa approaches Human Rights Day on 21 March 2025, a groundbreaking initiative is transforming the way citizens engage with their history. The Old Fort Visitor Experience, designed by formula D_, is an immersive and interactive exhibit at Johannesburg’s Constitution Hill, offering a fresh perspective on the nation’s journey to democracy.

Located within the historic Old Fort, once a notorious prison, this exhibit brings history to life through compelling storytelling and state-of-the-art multimedia displays. Visitors are guided on a self-paced journey, exploring narratives of those who were once incarcerated within these walls. A highlight of the experience is a holographic projection of anti-apartheid leader Joe Slovo, allowing guests to engage with his powerful story in a recreated prison cell.

With game-like interactive elements and thought-provoking storytelling, formula D_ aims to make history accessible and engaging. ‘Our design theme, ‘shadows of the past,’ allowed us to tell stories using light and shadow effects, ensuring minimal disruption to the site’s historical integrity,” says Michael Wolf, co-CEO of formula D_. ‘When working on a heritage site, it is important to not disrupt or remove surrounding infrastructure and artifacts.’

Many museums in South Africa struggle to attract visitors due to traditional presentation methods. formula D_ seeks to change that by using technology and immersive storytelling. ‘At the Old Fort, our intention is to unlock the site’s history in manners that encourage critical thinking for visitors of various age groups and educational backgrounds,’ adds Wolf. ‘This intuitive approach to history is more than just about education; it helps us establish a connection with the past. And – in a world where human rights are still contested, it’s critical for these stories to be heard.’
