Former DA leader Tony Leon and ex-ANC MP Lindiwe Sisulu have informally entered the race to become South Africa’s next ambassador to the United States.
This follows the recent expulsion of Ebrahim Rasool, who returned home on Sunday after being declared persona non grata by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Leon and Sisulu Backed by Different Political Camps
DA federal chairperson Helen Zille suggested Leon as a potential candidate, citing his diplomatic experience, including his tenure as South Africa’s ambassador to Argentina.
Zille emphasised the need for a strategic appointment, given US President Donald Trump’s inward-looking policies and South Africa’s strained relations with Washington.
“Tony Leon would be a suitable choice. He has all the top-level skills,” Zille told SABC News. She also warned that maintaining a hostile relationship with the US could harm South Africa’s economy.
On the other hand, the Activists and Citizens Forum, through spokesperson Dennis Bloem, nominated Sisulu, arguing that she possesses the strength and experience to navigate the growing tensions between the two nations. Bloem called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to expedite the appointment, stressing that leaving the position vacant would be detrimental.
“Her track record speaks for itself. Dr. Sisulu will put the country’s interests above party politics and represent South Africa with honour,” said Bloem.

Supporters of Leon argue that his diplomatic expertise and international standing make him the best choice, while Sisulu’s backers believe her extensive government experience and political background position her well for the role.
