Royal AM sale collapses as PSL blocks R20 million deal, according to Cash N Sport.

Durban businessman Chockalingam “Roy” Moodley will not be taking over Royal AM after the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Executive Committee refused to approve the deal. Initially, reports suggested that Moodley had secured the club for R20 million from the curator, but the transaction has now fallen apart.

Moodley, a known associate of former President Jacob Zuma, has been linked to multiple high-profile State Capture scandals. His company, Royal Security, secured a controversial R282 million contract in 2023 from the DA-led Western Cape provincial government. The Democratic Alliance attempted to block the deal, which covered security services for government properties over two years.

    Royal AM’S trouble season continues

Moodley’s attempt to enter the football scene came at a time when Royal AM faced turmoil. Since November, the club has been in crisis, failing to play a single match in 2025 after the South African Revenue Service (SARS) seized owner Shauwn Mkhize’s assets.

The PSL responded by suspending all of Royal AM’s fixtures indefinitely. The team was also excluded from the Nedbank Cup Round of 32, granting Milford a bye.

SARS, aiming to recover a reported R40 million debt from Mkhize, appointed Jaco Venter as the club’s curator. The tax authority pursued either liquidation or a sale of the club, eventually approving a deal.

However, despite multiple interested buyers—including individuals from Russia and Greece—political concerns in South Africa led to the rejection of their bids.

    PSL considers expanding league

With Royal AM’s future uncertain and 19 matches still not played. The PSL plans to meet on Thursday to determine the next steps. According to Sportwire, the league is considering a bold move. Scrapping relegation this season and expanding the league to 18 teams for the 2025/2026 campaign.

If approved, the top two clubs from the Motsepe Foundation Championship would gain promotion. Which would ensure no team faces relegation this season.

With Moodley’s deal collapsing, Royal AM remains up for grabs. The question now is: Who will step in to save the struggling club?
