Lobby group AfriForum says it is preparing to launch defamation proceedings against high-profile political figures who allegedly falsely implicated an Eastern Cape principal in a child rape investigation.

    Principal Cleared, But Damage Done

The principal, who heads a school in the Eastern Cape, was accused of obstructing a police investigation into the rape of a 7-year-old girl in 2024. The alleged incident reportedly occurred on the school’s premises, sparking national outrage and fierce political commentary.

However, police have since cleared the principal of any wrongdoing, confirming he is not a suspect and that he was not present on the school premises at the time of the incident.

AfriForum Blames Politicians for Smear Campaign

AfriForum, which is representing the embattled headmaster, claims the principal became the target of a politically motivated smear campaign led by prominent politicians. The group is now pursuing legal action for defamation and reputational harm.

Among the officials potentially facing legal consequences are:

    • Police Minister Senzo Mchunu
    • EFF leader Julius Malema
    • ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula

“The principal was publicly pilloried based on the fictitious claim he had obstructed a police investigation into the rape of a child who attended the school,” said AfriForum spokesperson Barry Bateman.

“If the National Prosecuting Authority declines to prosecute these cases, the unit will proceed with private prosecutions.”

    Calls for Apology and Accountability

AfriForum has also demanded a public apology from Police Minister Mchunu, accusing him of remaining silent despite the alleged false narrative being spread under his watch.

The case has sparked a broader conversation around due process, the presumption of innocence, and the potential abuse of public platforms by political figures to advance agendas at the cost of individuals’ reputations.
