Satguru Travels, which has operated in Rwanda since 1989, joined the country’s commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi with a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial on May 9.

The visit offered staff members a deeper understanding of the Genocide’s historical context and Rwanda’s path forward. Speaking to The New Times, Satguru Country Manager Sunilkumar S said the decision to participate in this year’s national remembrance events stemmed from the company’s long-standing ties to the country.

“As a company that started its journey from Kigali in 1989, Rwanda holds a special place in our history,” he said. “Participating in Kwibuka 31 is our way of honouring the memory of the victims and standing with the nation. We believe businesses have a role to play in preserving history and supporting collective healing, and we are humbled to contribute in this way.”

Sunilkumar emphasised that Satguru’s involvement aimed to promote unity and remembrance while reinforcing the company’s place in the broader Rwandan community.

“Our message is one of unity, remembrance, and shared responsibility,” he said. “By joining in this national commemoration, we hope to inspire compassion and reaffirm our commitment to peace and reconciliation–not just as a company, but as part of the larger Rwandan community.”

Asked about the internal and community-level impact of such initiatives, Sunilkumar said the memorial visit helped strengthen bonds among staff while encouraging a culture of reflection and empathy.

“This initiative brought our team closer together, creating space for reflection and understanding,” he said. “It also marked the beginning of our broader corporate social responsibility work, starting with healthcare support to a survivor’s family. It’s a small but meaningful step towards unity, dignity, and giving back to the community that has shaped us.”

Following the memorial visit, Satguru staff laid wreaths in remembrance of the victims before meeting with a Genocide survivor in Gisozi Sector.

The visit was aimed at understanding her current challenges and offering assistance for her senior living needs. Survivors facing trauma and age-related conditions are often supported by both government and private sector actors, including companies like Satguru that are stepping up to play a role in post-Genocide recovery and solidarity.
