A new seasonal, tourism-only border crossing between South Africa’s Kruger National Park and Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou National Park has officially opened as a pilot project, offering travellers a unique way to explore the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA).

Approved by the Ministers of Home Affairs in both countries, the crossing operates via the Sengwe-Tshipise Corridor at the Pafuri-Sengwe access point. The initiative aims to test demand and feasibility for cross-border tourism movement within this shared conservation landscape.

The pilot runs from 1 May to 30 November 2025 (river levels permitting), with crossings limited to two pre-scheduled days per week. Border operations will be open between 11:00 and 15:00, and only 4×4 vehicles will be allowed.

Access comes with strict conditions. Travellers must pre-book at least 14 days in advance, with a minimum four-night stay split between South Africa and Zimbabwe — two nights in the Makuleke Region, Awelani Lodge or another approved site in Kruger, and two nights in Gonarezhou or nearby approved lodges. Registration with SANParks and ZimParks, submission of immigration exemption forms, and valid travel documents are compulsory.

Border formalities will be conducted at Pafuri Gate (South Africa) and the designated entry point in Zimbabwe. Travellers will undergo screening, including interviews and temperature checks. No goods, commercial cargo, or unauthorised items are permitted, and those crossing must exit the receiving country at a designated international border post within visa limits.

The project, supported by Boundless Southern Africa, is part of efforts to strengthen eco-tourism, support regional economies, and promote the GLTFCA as a single, cross-border wilderness destination. Eco-friendly practices, including strict waste management and respect for cultural heritage, are mandatory for all visitors.
