    Cape Town winter calls for cosy corners, leathery interiors and, of course, a good whisky. Whether you’re a seasoned devotee of a well-crafted dram or simply looking for a snug Insta-worthy catch-up spot, these five venues will do that and more.

    1. Bascule Bar at the Cape Grace

    This one’s a bit of a whisky pilgrimage. Whiskies are lining the walls at Bascule, overlooking the scenic V&A Marina. It’s the kind of place where the barman knows what you’re in the mood for before you do. Enjoy a tasting experience crafted just for you.

    2. Hank’s Olde Irish

    Hank’s boasts, chocolatey woody finishes, low lighting and smooth jazz. This speakeasy-style bar feels like a warm hug, with a whisky selection that encourages you to stick around.

    3. Athletic Club & Social 

    Not particularly known for their whisky, but definitely worth the visit. Now both a cocktail bar and restaurant – it’s the perfect place to find a quiet corner, have a sip of liquid warmth or savour a great meal, all while enjoying a live performance amidst a vintage-inspired backdrop.

    4. The Whisky Library Bar at Rust en Vrede Art Gallery

    Showcasing stellar reviews, Rust en Vrede’s Whisky Library is a quiet gem. Think plush seating, a roaring fire and a collection of over 200 bottles. It’s a perfect winter escape paired with whisky tasting journeys and dining with the Cape winelands savoir-faire.

    An institution in its own right with a stellar view of table mountain. Rick’s is a bohemian blend of Casablanca nostalgia and Cape Town gees. The whisky list is long, the fire is crackling and the rooftop views are worth braving the chill.
