A major transformation is on the horizon for George Airport, as Acsa earmarks over R300 million to double its passenger capacity by 2028.

George Airport, one of the Western Cape’s busiest regional hubs, is getting a significant upgrade. Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has announced plans for a R310 million terminal expansion, set to begin in October 2026 and wrap up by July 2028.

Once complete, the airport will be able to accommodate nearly two million passengers a year—more than double its current annual traffic of 900,000.

The expansion will modernise key passenger processing areas, including the check-in counters, baggage handling systems, security screening, and departure lounges. Arrival facilities and public concourses will also be refreshed, with added improvements to boarding gates, baggage claim, airline offices, and retail and lounge spaces.

“Acsa is committed to minimising operational disruptions during the refurbishment of key passenger processing areas,” the company stated.

Outside the terminal, the airport’s road access and parking areas will be overhauled to streamline traffic flow and increase parking capacity.

Infrastructure upgrades are also in the pipeline:

    • Emergency and Perimeter Road projects are scheduled to begin in November 2025 and February 2026, respectively.

    • The Runway 11/29 rehabilitation will commence in October 2026, aligned with the main terminal construction timeline.

    • A R9.4 million investment will upgrade the Instrument Landing System from Category 1 to Category 2. This crucial enhancement will begin in May 2026 and be completed by November 2026, improving safety and accessibility during poor weather conditions.

With these developments, George Airport is poised to handle growing regional demand and provide a more efficient, comfortable experience for both domestic and international travellers.
