Kaizer Chiefs will kick off the 2025-26 Betway Premiership season without two of their signings in Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman.
And that’s because the saga involving the two players and Cape Town Spurs appears to be far from over.
As previously reported by The South African, Chiefs did seal the Velebayi deal but later Spurs contested it.
Spurs claim that both Velebayi and Baartman belong to them as they have existing contracts to keep them.
This despite the fact that Spurs were relegated to the ABC Motsepe League; an amateur league in South African football.
Players in the amateur ranks do not have binding contracts with their teams. In fact, their contracts are season-to-season.
KAIZER CHIEFS STILL CAN’T HAVE THEIR MEN
Now, the latest is that the PSL Resolution Chamber (PSL DRC) is still going through all the evidence presented by all parties.
Spurs believe the two players – Velebayi and Baartman – have no leg to stand, and that they should report back to training.
However, the two youngsters are training alone, and have not reported for pre-season at Ikamva as the matter is ongoing.
Chiefs, on the other hand, are waiting on the sidelines for the final verdict before they can register their men with the PSL.
Nonetheless, the wait could be prolonged by the disputes between the parties involved and the PSL DRC taking time to make a ruling.
