The Democratic Alliance (DA) has officially named Cilliers Brink as its mayoral candidate for the Tshwane metro ahead of next year’s local government elections. The announcement follows what the party described as a “thorough selection process,” with Brink emerging as the standout contender.

Brink previously served as Tshwane mayor for 18 months before being ousted in September last year through a motion of no confidence. DA leader John Steenhuisen made the announcement in Pretoria on Friday, praising Brink’s leadership track record.

“Let’s introduce a man who has got the track record of delivery, a person who did between 2023 and 2024. The person who is going to do it again. The DA’s candidate for mayor of Tshwane is Cilliers Brink,” Steenhuisen said.

Cilliers Brink Has A Career in Law and Politics

A law graduate, Brink served as a member of Parliament from 2019 to 2023 before leaving the National Assembly to return to the Tshwane council.

He was elected mayor through a coalition between the DA and ActionSA, but his tenure ended when Herman Mashaba’s party withdrew its support and aligned with an ANC-led coalition.

Brink’s removal sparked controversy, with videos of municipal employees celebrating at the City of Tshwane’s headquarters going viral on social media.

Political Stakes Ahead of 2026 Elections

The DA is positioning Brink as the candidate to “drive Tshwane forward,” banking on his prior experience and reform-focused approach. His return sets the stage for a competitive race as the party seeks to reclaim full control of the capital city.

Meanwhile, speculation continues over whether Helen Zille will contest as the DA’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, adding further intrigue to the party’s 2026 municipal election strategy.
