Western Province winger Shilton van Wyk insists the team is edging closer to a complete 80-minute performance as they chase a first Currie Cup win of the season in Bloemfontein.

WP are still rooted to the bottom of the table with zero log points after three rounds, and face a red-hot Cheetahs side on Saturday in what could be a defining clash for their semi-final hopes.

PREVIEW: WP at risk of dreaded Currie Cup wooden spoon

Despite the bleak standings, Van Wyk believes Province are building momentum.

“We’re starting to gel together nicely in training and finding each other. We just need to bring that into the game. It’s getting closer to the point where we play as a team, as a unit.”

The Blitzboks star, who earned his reputation as a prolific points-scorer on the Sevens circuit, will start on the right wing at the Toyota Stadium, having featured at fullback in the opening two rounds.

DEWIES: WP must learn on the run

After six years away from the 15-man game, Van Wyk admits the transition hasn’t been seamless.

“It’s lekker to play 15s again. But the adjustment to 15s has been difficult due to the lack of space and more defenders to beat. Having said that, I’m enjoying playing 15s again after six years. The pitches up north are typically faster, so it’s good for backs like me to be put into space.”

Backline coach Dewaldt Duvenage says Van Wyk has been a standout since joining the Currie Cup setup, and hinted that while he will return to the Blitzboks after the competition, he could have a longer-term role in the union’s plans.
