    President Cyril Ramaphosa has intensified diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. On Saturday, 23 August 2025, Ramaphosa held a series of phone calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Finnish President Alexandar Stubb to discuss ongoing peace initiatives.

    The Presidency confirmed that additional conversations with other European leaders will take place in the coming weeks. Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of strengthening dialogue to support peace between Russia and Ukraine.

    European Leaders Welcome South Africa’s Role in Peace Efforts

    According to Presidency Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, European leaders have been receptive to South Africa’s engagement.

    “In all the discussions, European leaders openly shared their perspectives, appreciated South Africa’s role in engaging with both sides to the conflict and provided President Ramaphosa with a firm commitment to supporting efforts aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Magwenya said.

    The talks follow recent meetings hosted by former U.S. President Donald Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and other European leaders.

    Ramaphosa also noted that he had received a detailed briefing from President Putin after his discussions with Trump.

    Ramaphosa Urges Momentum Towards Peace in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

    The South African leader stressed the urgency of continued engagement, calling for bilateral and trilateral meetings between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. He believes such dialogue is critical to demonstrate a firm commitment to peace.

    “President Ramaphosa calls on all parties to seize this moment and sustain the momentum towards peace between Russia and Ukraine,” the Presidency said in a statement.
