South African paddler Hamish Lovemore picked up in Milan where he had finished in Chengdu with another silver medal in a major event. Following two silvers at The World Games in China, he earned a silver at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Spain.
The 2024 Paris Olympian had won his silvers in the K1 marathon (long and short distances) and this time it was in the K1 1500m. As was the case in Chengdu, Lovemore settled for silver in 21min 13.35sec, behind Denmark’s Mads Pedersen, with Hungaey’s Adam Varga taking bronze.
Team South Africa sent three athletes to the World Championships. Apart from Lovemore, another Paris Olympian in Esti Olivier competed in the Women’s K1 200m and 500m events, advancing to the Final B in the shorter distance. Henry van der Walt also represented the country in the Men’s K1 200m and 500m.
