More than 120 case dockets linked to political killings in KwaZulu-Natal will soon be sent back to the province, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed this week.

The dockets, which were removed in March, had initially been handled by the KZN Political Killings Task Team.

Their sudden removal sparked controversy after KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged during a July press briefing that suspended Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya was behind the decision.

According to Mkhwanazi, Sibiya acted under instructions from suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. He further claimed that several arrests were close to being made before the files were taken away.

Masemola Confirms Directive to Return Files

Speaking in Cape Town on Thursday, Masemola revealed he had issued a directive last week to ensure the dockets are returned to KwaZulu-Natal.

“The detectives are busy making copies, and then they’ll be sent back to the provincial commissioner,” Masemola told reporters.

He added that the process included thorough verification to ensure nothing had been altered:

“When they were taken in, they were checked. So the same process is what they’re doing now, checking. In case there are some disparities, they will pick it up, but otherwise they’re going to check it against the record.”

Spotlight on Political Killings in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal has faced years of political violence, with assassinations and attempted killings frequently linked to power struggles within political structures. The controversy over the removed dockets has fueled concerns about possible interference in ongoing investigations.

The return of the files is expected to help investigators resume progress in cracking down on politically motivated crimes in the province.
