Heritage Month in South Africa, celebrated each September, is a time to reflect on the nation’s rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and traditions. While many associate cultural exploration with expensive outings, numerous free and low-cost experiences are available throughout the country. From museums and walking tours to vibrant festivals, there’s something for every budget.

    1. Iziko Museums of South Africa (Cape Town)
Iziko offers several museums that delve into South Africa’s diverse heritage. Notably, the Iziko South African Museum showcases natural history, while the Slave Lodge provides insights into the country’s colonial past. On 24 September, these museums, along with the Bo-Kaap Museum and Groot Constantia Manor House, offer free entry, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the nation’s history at no cost.

    2. Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum (Western Cape)
Situated in Somerset West, this museum highlights the experiences of migrant workers during apartheid. It’s the first township-based museum in South Africa and offers a poignant look into the challenges faced by many during that era.

    3. Donkin Heritage Trail (Port Elizabeth)
This self-guided 5km trail winds through the heart of Port Elizabeth, linking 51 historical sites that showcase the city’s colonial past. It’s an excellent way to explore the area’s heritage on foot.

    Free walking tours

    2. Free Walking Tours Cape Town
Departing daily from Motherland Coffee in Mandela Rhodes Place, these tours include the Historic City Tour and the Apartheid to Freedom Tour, covering significant landmarks like the Company’s Garden, Parliament, and the Castle of Good Hope.

    Cultural festivals & events

    1. Folklore Festival (Johannesburg)

Scheduled for 11–13 September 2025, this festival celebrates African culture through music, dance, and art. While some events may have entry fees, many activities are free, making them accessible to all.

    2. Mzansi Legends Heritage Festival (Pretoria)
Taking place on 26–27 September 2025, this festival honours South Africa’s musical heritage with performances from legendary artists. Workshops and intergenerational dialogues aim to inspire the next generation of cultural custodians.

    3. CapeNature Free-Access Week (Western Cape)
From 20 to 26 September 2025, CapeNature offers free access to many reserves across the Western Cape, including popular spots like Jonkershoek and Kogelberg. This initiative allows visitors to enjoy nature hikes and picnics without the usual conservation fees.

    Regional highlights

    KwaXolo Caves (KwaZulu-Natal South Coast)
Home to ancient San rock art, these caves offer guided tours that combine history with adventure. The experience includes elements like ziplining, making it both educational and thrilling.
