From 28 September to 5 October 2025, the North West Parks and Tourism Board (NWPTB) is inviting South African residents to enjoy free entry to 13 of its provincial nature and game reserves, in celebration of Park Mahala Week 2025.

Entry is complimentary for SA citizens—just present a valid South African ID or passport at the gate.

Excluded from this free-access initiative, as reported by Travel News Africa, is the Madikwe Game Reserve, which remains off-limits to day visitors during the promotion week.

The list of the 13 participating reserves includes:

    • Barberspan Bird Sanctuary
    • Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve
    • Borakalalo National Reserve
    • Boskop Dam Nature Reserve
    • Botsalano Game Reserve
    • Kgaswane Mountain Reserve
    • Mafikeng Game Reserve
    • Molemane Eye Nature Reserve
    • Molopo Game Reserve
    • Pilanesberg National Park
    • S.A. Lombard Nature Reserve
    • Vaalkop Dam Nature Reserve
    • Wolwespruit (Dam) Nature Reserve

These protected areas are renowned for their diverse offerings, ranging from exceptional birdwatching at Barberspan, expansive dam landscapes at Boskop and Bloemhof, sweeping game drives in Pilanesberg, to tranquil wilderness experiences in Borakalalo, Molopo, and Wolwespruit. Kgaswane impresses with its mountainous terrain and hiking trails; Mafikeng offers fast and rewarding wildlife circuits, while Botsalano and Molemane Eye are prized for their conservation efforts and scenic charm. S.A. Lombard, though not open to the general public normally, is a historical conservation site, and Vaalkop is beloved by anglers and nature lovers alike.

Park Mahala Week not only encourages South Africans to reconnect with the outdoors but also fosters appreciation for the province’s biodiversity. Whether you’re a birdwatcher, hiker, angler, or just in pursuit of serene landscapes, this initiative presents a fantastic opportunity to explore at no cost.

Pack your ID or passport and set out to experience the province’s breathtaking reserves, free of charge.
