Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has raised serious concerns over the Western Cape police’s ability to combat gang violence.
Speaking to residents in Mitchells Plain on Tuesday, Cachalia said he does not believe police have a concrete plan to tackle the surge in gang-related shootings affecting the area.

Mitchells Plain, part of the notorious Cape Flats, has experienced a sharp increase in gang activity, leaving communities on edge and residents demanding urgent action.
“No-Nonsense Approach” Needed to Defeat Gangs
Addressing the crowd, Cachalia emphasized that a bold, decisive strategy is crucial.
“We need to go on an offensive against drug lords, stabilise our communities and make sure we are in charge, and our people are in charge, not the criminals. But the plan to defeat the gangs, I don’t believe that plan is in place,” he said.
The minister stressed that without a clear strategy, organised crime syndicates continue to operate with impunity, leaving local communities vulnerable.

Cachalia warned that the country is falling behind in the battle against gangs and organised crime. His visit to Cape Town this week is part of a broader initiative to engage residents from crime-stricken areas and outline potential measures to curb the spread of gang violence.

“The fight against gangs requires coordinated, aggressive action. Communities cannot continue to live in fear while criminals dictate the rules,” he added.
