MSC Cruises has unveiled a bold new plan for its 2026 World Cruise aboard the MSC Magnifica. The new journey will be rerouted around Africa in place of a Red Sea passage.

Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea have prompted MSC to suspend its planned route through the Suez Canal, according to Travel and Tour World. The new reroute will take the cruise around the Cape of Good Hope.

    New Destinations

The rerouted voyage will now be extended by 12 days, bringing the total duration of the cruise to approximately 131 nights, up from the original 118. MSC has confirmed that this extension will come at no additional cost to guests. The services included in the initial route will remain valid for the additional days.

The revised itinerary introduces new African and Indian Ocean destinations:

    Alternative options and refund policy

MSC Cruises is offering full refunds for those who prefer not to continue with the revised route. Guests have also been given sufficient time to review the new schedule and make decisions accordingly.

    Impact on South Africa

South Africa stands to benefit significantly from this reroute. Ports in Cape Town and Durban are set to see increased cruise traffic. This could bring potential boosts to local businesses, supporting South Africa’s ambitions to grow as a key player in the global tourism sector. It also has the potential for future cruise routes to incorporate more African destinations as high-risk zone alternatives.
