Super Typhoon Ragasa, one of the most powerful storms yet this year, slammed into northern Philippines and is now barreling across the South China Sea toward southern China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong sparking mass evacuations, travel chaos, and growing concern across the region.

    What we know so far:

    • In the Philippines, Ragasa (known locally as “Nando”) made landfall over islands in Cagayan province with sustained winds up to about 215 km/h (134 mph) and gusts reaching nearly 295 km/h (183 mph).
    • The storm has caused landslides and flooding, cut power in remote areas, forced thousands of people to evacuate, and led to the closure of schools and government offices in 29 northern provinces.

    Heading toward China and Taiwan:

    • Forecasts place Ragasa moving west–northwest, posing a serious threat to southern China, particularly Guangdong province, as well as Taiwan and Hong Kong.
    • According to reports by Al Jazeera, authorities have already begun shutting down flights and ferries, closing schools and public offices, and preparing emergency measures. In places like Shenzhen, some 400,000 people in low-lying or flood-prone zones are being moved to safer ground.

Travel disruption and what to expect:

    • Expect cancellations and delays at airports and across public transport networks in the affected areas. Weather-services are warning of strong winds, torrential rains, and storm surges that could inundate coastal zones.
    • Tourists in southern China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and the northern Philippines should monitor local advisories closely. Ensure travel plans are flexible, check with airlines, and have contingency arrangements in case of sheltering or last-minute changes.
