The African National Congress (ANC) has pledged that only competent, ethical, and trustworthy candidates will make it onto the party’s list for the upcoming local government elections.
The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), its highest decision-making structure between conferences, is currently meeting to finalise its candidate selection process and other key issues.

Mbalula: Leadership Quality Is Non-Negotiable
Addressing the media on Saturday, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said the party recognises the responsibility it carries as South Africans continue to look to it for solutions to the country’s challenges.
“This is not just about compiling lists; it’s about the quality of leadership we put before our people. Our process is clear and uncompromising. Candidates must emerge from community consultations, undergo rigorous vetting and be assessed, not by factional loyalty, but by their integrity,” Mbalula explained.

Mbalula emphasised that the ANC’s candidate lists will not be determined behind closed doors but will be shaped by input from communities across the country.
He stressed that the process prioritises credibility and accountability over political allegiance in an effort to restore public trust.
