Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has cautioned South Africans against casting their votes for smaller political parties, arguing that such decisions only extend the hardships faced by residents in poorly managed municipalities.

Speaking to party supporters in Gqeberha on Monday, Steenhuisen emphasised the importance of granting a single party an outright majority in order to bring stability and effective service delivery to local governments — particularly in troubled metros such as Nelson Mandela Bay.

He stated, “Voters in unstable metros with poor service delivery, like Nelson Mandela Bay, have to give one party an outright majority if they want to see meaningful change and political stability.”
DA Introduces Retief Odendaal as Mayoral Candidate
During his address, Steenhuisen officially introduced Retief Odendaal as the DA’s mayoral candidate for the upcoming 2026 local government elections. The announcement signals the DA’s intent to reclaim and stabilise key municipalities that have struggled under coalition arrangements and political infighting.

Steenhuisen used the platform to rally support for the DA’s vision of consistent governance and accountability, urging residents to unite behind one strong opposition rather than divide their votes among multiple smaller entities.
John Steenhuisen Criticises Newly Formed Political Alliances
Steenhuisen’s remarks come shortly after the Rise Mzansi, Good Party, and Build One South Africa (BOSA) alliance — now known as Unite for Change — announced their merger to contest next year’s elections.
In a pointed critique, Steenhuisen said, “People come along and form other parties like Rise Mzansi. Well, they didn’t rise in the last election. It’s like my soufflé, it never rises.
“They don’t get it right and you know what ends up happening? Thousands of our people go and vote for those parties and where are they today? Did they put a single tap on? Did they put a single kilowatt of electricity in your home?”
