According to Tourism Update, the building is believed to be the earliest known example of Cape Dutch architecture, originally constructed in 1682 and was once home to the farm’s founder, Catharina Ras.
The restoration project, led by Managing Director Catherine Schulze, set out to preserve the building’s heritage while introducing modern touches that reflect Steenberg’s reputation for understated luxury.
Preserving Original Features
The team focused on retaining the Manor House’s authentic character. Original elements such as the thatch roof, timber beams, sash windows, and wide-plank flooring were carefully restored. The colour palette of rust, ochre, chocolate, dusty pink, and cream was selected to enhance the building’s historic atmosphere while complementing its natural light.
Furnishings were custom designed to match the building’s original proportions and finishes. The combination of antique detailing and contemporary craftsmanship has created an interior that feels both elegant and timeless.
Collaboration with Local Artisans
Local designers and artisans played a central role in the project. Douglas and Douglas, Arrange Studio, Wunders, Bofred, Modern Gesture, the Mohair Mill Shop, and James Mudge contributed furniture and interior pieces that celebrate South African design.
The Manor House also features artworks by Jolene Olivier, Vanessa Cowling, Paul Edmunds, and Cecil Skotnes, adding a contemporary dimension to the historical setting.
Focus on Sustainability
Sustainability guided every stage of the restoration. Where possible, materials were reused and repurposed from the original structure. The project also prioritised local suppliers and environmentally responsible construction methods.
The landscaping surrounding the Manor House has been revitalised to align with the broader restoration effort. Upgrades across the estate’s hospitality areas ensure a consistent and cohesive guest experience.
A Blend of History and Modern Comfort
According to Schulze, the Manor House restoration was designed to offer guests “immersive and thoughtful luxury.” She said the goal was to preserve the spirit of the original building while ensuring it remains functional for modern visitors.
The completed Manor House now stands as a living example of Cape Dutch heritage, offering an experience that combines history, craftsmanship, and contemporary hospitality in the heart of the Constantia Valley.
