The Presidency and the State Attorney are heading to the Pretoria High Court on Friday for a legal showdown with former President Jacob Zuma. The state aims to recover roughly R28 million that was spent on Zuma’s personal legal battles during his presidency.

The move follows earlier court decisions that invalidated and set aside the Presidency and State Attorney’s decisions to fund Zuma’s legal costs. The court also ordered the State Attorney to take all necessary steps to recover the money previously paid by the State.

Zuma Fails to Repay Despite Demand

According to court documents, the Presidency and the State Attorney sent Zuma a letter of demand requesting repayment of the R28 million. However, Zuma reportedly did not respond and has not made any payments.

The Presidency is now seeking a court order to compel repayment, arguing that Zuma is legally obligated to return the funds after the initial decisions were overturned.

In response, the former president has opposed the application, maintaining that it is unrealistic to expect him to settle such a large sum.

Zuma stated that “no one, including the court, can believe that he will be able to pay the R28 million in his lifetime for monies that were not paid to him personally.”

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10:00am at the Pretoria High Court, where both sides are expected to present their arguments in the long-running dispute over Zuma’s state-funded legal costs.
