The National Freedom Party (NFP) has thrown its weight behind the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, endorsing it to lead the KwaZulu-Natal government. The move threatens to unravel the already fragile coalition currently governing the province.

The NFP, which has been part of the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), delivered a bombshell announcement on Sunday, officially withdrawing its support for Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli. The party cited a lack of true partnership and ineffective collaboration within the GPU.

In the 2024 general elections, the MK Party secured a commanding 45% of the provincial vote, positioning itself as a major political force in KwaZulu-Natal.

Coalition Under Pressure as NFP Calls for Political Change

Following the elections, a coalition government was formed between the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), and the NFP, in a bid to prevent the MK Party from taking control of the province.

However, after a year in the GPU, tensions appear to have reached breaking point. NFP President Ivan Barnes announced the party’s discontent and its desire for a new direction in provincial leadership.

“Our way forward, as the National Freedom Party, the ongoing political discussions among parties in KwaZulu-Natal and the overwhelming support the electorate expressed for the MK Party (MKP) in the recent provincial elections, we believe it may be prudent to allow the MKP to take a leading role in any future provincial governance formation,” said Barnes.

MK Party Poised for Power in KwaZulu-Natal

With 37 out of 80 seats in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, the MK Party now sits just four seats short of forming a government on its own. The NFP’s endorsement could prove to be a pivotal step in reshaping the political landscape of the province.

If the NFP’s shift leads to formal cooperation, KwaZulu-Natal could soon see a new government led by the MK Party, potentially ending the coalition’s turbulent reign.
