African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has once again raised the alarm, warning that the ruling party is facing an existential crisis.
Speaking candidly about the ANC’s struggles, Mbalula acknowledged the party’s diminishing national majority, waning public confidence, and the damaging effects of corruption and internal divisions.

During a branch general meeting held at Liliesleaf in Rivonia on Sunday, Mbalula urged members to confront the harsh reality facing the movement. He cautioned that the ANC’s survival depends on its ability to renew itself and regain the trust of South Africans.
He emphasised that failure to act decisively could give opposition parties an advantage, further eroding the ANC’s influence.
“We are facing an existential crisis and the fundamental question is: what do we do about it? And that is what is facing our leadership – not just nationally, even here. You should be telling us here, ‘we should be going this direction, not this direction,’” said Mbalula.

Fikile Mbalula Calls for Party Renewal and Unity Amid Political Pressure
Mbalula criticised the tendency of ANC members to focus on rival parties instead of strengthening their own structures and leadership.
He warned against being distracted by developments in other political organisations, particularly as parties prepare for key battles in major metros like Johannesburg.
“Stop arguing about some MaGogo who is announced, let’s have our own MaGogo. I’m happy now to see the ANC focus, the mayor focus. That mayor position is big,” he said.

His remarks come as the ANC faces mounting challenges both within and outside its ranks, with growing pressure to demonstrate unity and accountability ahead of future elections.
