The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng have made it clear they will not support or engage with the Democratic Alliance (DA) regarding its proposed motion of no confidence in Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

The DA recently announced its intention to remove Lesufi following a damning report by the Public Protector, which criticised the establishment of the Gauteng crime prevention wardens—known as AmaPanyaza.

The report stated that the initiative was irregularly formed and lacked any legal authority to carry out policing duties.

In a letter to the DA, the EFF in Gauteng said the party had long branded them as “public enemy number one,” adding that the DA could not “have its bread buttered on both sides” by disparaging them publicly while also seeking their backing.

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party also dismissed the DA’s move, labelling the motion “opportunistic.” MK’s caucus leader in the Gauteng legislature, Thabang Nkani, said Premier Lesufi should not be punished for attempting to tackle the province’s escalating crime rate.

“Maybe if you will push to integrate AmaPanyaza into a correct state that they want as a law. As lawmakers, we must support that, we can’t allow our people to be unemployed. We can’t allow crime to go high,” Nkani said.

Meanwhile, ActionSA has informed the DA that the motion is destined to fail without backing from both the EFF and MK Party, signalling that Lesufi’s position as premier remains secure for now.
