The African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg has hit back at several of its coalition partners after they submitted a motion of no confidence against Executive Mayor Dada Morero on Tuesday.

Parties involved in the move include the United Democratic Movement (UDM), Al-Jamah, the African Transformation Movement (ATM), and the African Heartlands Party (AHC).

The ANC labelled the action as “opportunistic,” expressing disappointment in its partners for what it sees as a betrayal of coalition unity.

According to the ANC, the motion undermines the stability of the city’s coalition government and distracts from service delivery priorities.

The motion’s backers have accused Mayor Morero of overstepping his role by allegedly interfering in administrative affairs. They also claim he has failed to carry out resolutions made by the Political Management Committee, which has led to growing tension within the coalition.

Despite mounting pressure, the ANC has reaffirmed its support for Morero, defending his leadership and calling the accusations unfounded. The party insists that coalition partners should prioritise cooperation over political manoeuvring.
