The end of the year is calling for an escape that goes beyond the usual beach holiday or city break.

It is time to step away from constant notifications, switch off your screens, and truly reconnect with the world around you. As the pace of modern life quickens, more travellers are searching for places that encourage slowing down, being present, and rediscovering the joy of shared experiences.

Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report highlights “Playtime Unplugged” as one of the year’s biggest travel movements, with 84 percent of travellers seeking moments that allow families to play together, and more than half planning screen-free time during holidays. According to Antoinette Turner, General Manager of Flight Centre Travel Group South Africa, the perfect digital detox is not about isolation but balance. “Sometimes you need a complete change of scenery,” she says. “Destinations that are so immersive you forget about work, emails and devices altogether.”

If your December is still wide open, here are destinations that promise rest, adventure, and moments of quiet magic.

    St Helena Island

Few places feel as far away as St Helena. This tiny volcanic island rises from the Atlantic with wild cliffs, historic landmarks, and some of the friendliest locals you will meet. Climb Jacob’s Ladder for sweeping views, swim at Rupert’s Beach, or take a boat trip to spot dolphins and whale sharks. By the end of the week, the mainland will feel like another world. Airlink’s seasonal Cape Town to Jamestown flights resume in December, making this remote gem surprisingly accessible. Connectivity is limited outside Jamestown, which makes it ideal for a true break.

    Seychelles

This Indian Ocean paradise is an easy win for families. Base yourself on Mahé or Praslin, spend your days swimming, cycling, and exploring Curieuse Island’s giant tortoises. Hop to La Digue for lazy beach days and island charm. Wi-Fi is available in most resorts but rare on the outer islands, making it a natural setting for a slower rhythm.

    Reunion Island

Reunion blends mountain and sea in perfect balance. Spend mornings hiking through lush cirques or exploring Piton de la Fournaise, and afternoons snorkelling in Saint-Gilles lagoon. A week to nine days is ideal, with car hire giving you freedom to explore. The further you travel from the coast, the weaker your signal becomes, a welcome reminder to stay present.

    Zanzibar, Tanzania

A journey to Zanzibar begins in the winding alleys of Stone Town before leading you to the tranquil beaches of the east coast. Swim with dolphins near Mnemba Atoll, visit Jozani Forest, and end your day watching the tide roll in. Internet speeds ebb and flow like the ocean, reminding you that island time is the only schedule worth following.

    Mozambique

Mozambique’s coastline stretches endlessly, offering simple pleasures and wild beauty. Whether you choose Vilanculos for island hopping or Tofo for ocean safaris, days drift by in a blur of turquoise water and sun. Most beach lodges have little to no Wi-Fi, perfect for uninterrupted relaxation.

    Zambia

Zambia offers families a mix of wonder and wilderness. Stand before Victoria Falls, cruise along the Zambezi, and track elephants in South Luangwa. Many safari camps intentionally limit Wi-Fi to central areas, letting you focus on the rustle of the bush and the sound of lion calls at night.

    Kruger National Park

Few destinations connect generations quite like Kruger. Combine a private reserve stay with a self-drive through the park for the best of both worlds. The deeper you go, the quieter it gets, until the only notifications you hear are birdcalls and the distant rumble of elephants.

    The Pondo Trail, Wild Coast

For adventurous families, the Pondo Trail is an unforgettable coastal hike. Over three to five days, you will pass tidal pools, waterfalls and cliff-top views. With little to no phone reception, it is a rare chance to reconnect over fireside meals and starry nights.

    Namibia

Namibia’s wide-open landscapes invite you to let go. From the dunes of Sossusvlei to Etosha’s watering holes, every corner offers silence and beauty. Road trips here are as memorable as the destinations themselves, and the lack of signal across deserts and mountains ensures you are truly present.

    Malawi

Known as the Warm Heart of Africa, Malawi is a land of calm waters and friendly smiles. Paddle across Lake Malawi, snorkel among colourful cichlids, or visit nearby villages. With minimal connectivity at lakeside lodges, it is the perfect place to unplug and unwind.

    Tips for Staying Unplugged

Set clear expectations before you travel. Decide on device-free times each day, keep phones on airplane mode, and download entertainment before you go. Bring a deck of cards, a good book and an open mind. “The best gift you can give your family is permission to be unreachable for a few days,” says Turner. “Choose the right destination, make a simple plan, and let the experience take over. The world can wait.”
