The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, currently on special leave, volunteered to step aside from his party duties following the launch of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to the ANC, its National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved that Mchunu should continue carrying out his organisational responsibilities within the party while remaining on special leave from his Cabinet post.

Mchunu’s spokesperson, Sithembiso Mshengu, confirmed that the minister has already appeared before the party’s Integrity Commission and will return after presenting evidence at the commission of inquiry.

“Indeed, I can confirm that Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is on special leave, did offer to step aside from all the organisational processes of the ANC.

“In terms of his active participation as NEC and NWC member. The NWC of the ANC rejected his request on the grounds that he is not yet charged in any court in the Republic of South Africa,” Mshengu said.
