The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has accused the State of squandering public funds in its prosecution of party Member of Parliament (MP) Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla.

Zuma-Sambudla’s highly anticipated 10-day trial began in the Durban High Court on Monday. She faces charges of using social media to incite violence and unrest during the 2021 civil disturbances that gripped parts of South Africa.

The MK Party has strongly criticised the State’s handling of the case, describing it as weak and politically motivated.

MK Party national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela accused the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of wasting resources on what he described as an unfounded case.

“We know that there were about 17 resources that were deployed and paid by the NPA, and if this is what they came out with, then this is totally embarrassing, especially when they were asked a simple question as to why did they take so long for them to come to this conclusion — let alone the trumped-up charges because this is what this is, trumped-up charges,” said Ndhlela.

He further suggested that Zuma-Sambudla is being unfairly targeted for political reasons.

Ndhlela added, “That alone tells you that there is no case and that they are at pains and they are desperate in terms of trying to pin down something on comrade Duduzile.”

The trial is set to continue on Tuesday, with the prosecution expected to call a new witness to testify as proceedings enter their second day.
