Deputy President Paul Mashatile has reaffirmed that the Government of National Unity (GNU) is functioning smoothly and remains dedicated to revitalising South Africa’s economy.

Speaking in the National Assembly on Tuesday, Mashatile expressed confidence that there would be no setbacks when Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana presents the Mid-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) on Wednesday.

He acknowledged that the GNU had faced challenges during the past year but insisted that lessons were learnt from the February budget mishap, which saw Godongwana forced to revise the budget twice before securing consensus among all parties.

“It can’t be expected that it will always be smooth sailing for 10 political parties to work together,” Mashatile said. “Nobody will keep the country back because there’s something they don’t agree with.”

GNU Prioritises Economic Growth and Investment

Mashatile emphasised that the GNU remains focused on its key priorities — stimulating economic growth and attracting investment. He assured citizens that despite differing political views, unity within the coalition remains intact.

He revealed that the GNU’s recent retreat was highly productive, adding that all parties had reached consensus on the MTBPS.

“We have found one another. So don’t be worried about anything. We have learnt from that experience,” he said.

    Overcoming Challenges Through Cooperation

Mashatile stressed that the GNU’s success should not be judged by its internal disagreements but rather by its ability to resolve differences and move forward collectively.

“The GNU’s success should not be measured by its disagreements, but by its capacity to overcome them and focus on national priorities,” he concluded.
