Mayibuye Africa Party leader Floyd Shivambu has called for the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into Black Poverty, urging South Africa to address the persistent inequalities affecting black communities.

Speaking at a public engagement in Midrand, north of Johannesburg, Shivambu delivered a progress update on the party’s efforts to strengthen its structure and expand its reach.

The Mayibuye Africa Party, which promotes “Total Freedom and Emancipation Now,” advocates for key issues including land redistribution, industrialisation, decolonised education, and respect for traditional leadership.

Floyd Shivambu Call to Shift Focus from “Palace Politics”

Shivambu emphasised the need for the country to prioritise development over what he termed “palace politics.”

“Let’s talk about this, let’s get the submissions. The last time there was an attempt to do so was the attempt to develop the Reconstruction and Development Plan which was deeply consultative and involved civil society submissions and community participation.

“We are calling for an organic and systematic systemic inquiry into the black poverty question so we can collectively and stop focusing on palace politics that do not change the price of bread,” he said.

South Africa’s G20 Role: A Call for African Agenda

Shivambu also urged the South African government to advance Africa’s interests during its G20 Presidency, which the country will host this month. The summit brings together the world’s most powerful economies to address global challenges.

“We think that South Africa should use this 12-month presidency of the G20 to call for a global end to illicit financial flows and resources theft which largely affect the African continent.

“South Africa must call for the end to destabilization of African countries especially the DRC, South Sudan, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. South Africa must call for the long overdue reconfiguration of global multinational institutions such as the Bank IMF and the World Trade Organisation,” said Shivambu.
