African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has firmly stated that South Africa will not allow its policies to be influenced by US President Donald Trump.

This comes after Trump escalated tensions by withdrawing all US officials from attending the upcoming G20 Summit, reportedly questioning South Africa’s inclusion in the economic group.

Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday after an ANC National Working Committee meeting, Mbalula said the party would not be intimidated into changing its stance.

“If we are to be punished for fighting for redress and social transformation in our country and advancing for equity in our country, as the African National Congress, for the reason why we were formed as an organisation, let it be,” said Mbalula.

In a separate international development, the ANC has urged the South African government to thoroughly investigate how 17 South Africans ended up fighting in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

The group is reportedly stranded in the war-torn Donbas region and has sent distress messages to Pretoria for assistance.

The party emphasised that determining under whose authority these men were recruited should be treated as a matter of urgency.
