Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has thanked the political parties that voted against the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) motion of no confidence in him.

The DA tabled the motion on Friday, citing concerns over the allegedly unconstitutional establishment of crime prevention wardens and his handling of tender corruption issues at Tembisa Hospital.

Lesufi ultimately survived the vote in the provincial legislature, where the African National Congress (ANC) leads a coalition administration. Despite the heated political climate, nine of the eleven represented parties opted to keep him in office.

Even parties that often clash with the ANC—including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), ActionSA, and the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus)—did not support the DA’s attempt to remove the premier.

    Gauteng Parties Reject Political Instability

Lesufi said the wide support showed a collective desire to end political turbulence in the province. He framed the outcome as a sign that lawmakers want stability and continuity rather than further upheaval.

“We are reclaiming what belongs to our people,” Lesufi said after the vote. “We are reenergised to confront the racism head-on. We are tired of racists, and their time is over.”

Lesufi Accuses DA of ‘Settling Political Scores’

The premier maintains that the DA’s motion was politically motivated rather than rooted in genuine governance concerns. He dismissed the move as an attempt to score points rather than address the province’s challenges.

Lesufi’s administration now looks to continue its programmes with renewed backing from a broad coalition of parties.
