Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has retained his position after the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) motion of no confidence against him failed to gain support in the provincial legislature.

The motion, tabled on Friday, centred on the DA’s accusations that Lesufi mishandled corruption allegations involving Tembisa Hospital tenders and acted negligently in establishing the crime prevention wardens.

Despite the DA’s push, the party could not persuade the majority of parties in the legislature to vote in favour of removing Lesufi.

The Gauteng legislature is made up of 11 political parties, most of which declined to back the motion. In the end, only the DA voted in favour of Lesufi’s removal, while all other parties — including those typically in opposition — chose to keep him in office.

Several parties dismissed the DA’s motion as frivolous, noting that the DA itself played a role in electing Lesufi to the position last year.

Legislature Speaker Morakane Mosupyoe formally announced the voting results.

The Freedom Front Plus opted not to support the DA’s motion but also refrained from voting to keep the premier, choosing instead to abstain from the process.

SurgeZirc SA had previously reported that EFF and MK Party made it clear that they were not going to support the motion. The EFF provincial leader Moses Koma called the move unfounded and politically motivated.

DA’s push for no-confidence vote failed.

Koma said, “Madam speaker, there is no motion sponsored by Stellenbosch and concocted by Donald Trump that will find expression. We want our land now.”

While the MK Party said Lesufi should remain in office. Party representative Thabang Nkani dismissed the motion as an attack without merit.

“As the MK Party, we stand firm and unequivocal against this frivolous motion of no confidence tabled by the DA. The DA is a party founded in 1999 by a racist opposition,” Nkani said.
