The African National Congress (ANC) has moved to tighten accountability within South Africa’s law-enforcement structures, calling for lifestyle audits on senior police officials and leadership figures within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Speaking after the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula said recent testimony presented to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and Parliament’s ad hoc committee on SAPS corruption has reinforced the need for immediate reform.

Mbalula stressed that the ANC expects decisive action as the police commission continues its work. He added that President Cyril Ramaphosa must lead by example to ensure lifestyle audits can be implemented across all levels of government.

“Lifestyle audits start with the president, and all Cabinet and at the same time in all the provinces this must be undertaken. This must go to the public service – the police, prosecutorial people, and senior police must undergo lifestyle audit. That is our decision.”

Mbalula emphasised the need for financial scrutiny to be applied uniformly, saying Cabinet members should undergo the same level of assessment they expect from their departments.

He added that the audits should extend across the public service, targeting senior police officials and prosecutorial staff.

The ANC secretary general also reiterated the party’s position on transforming the police service, calling for SAPS to be demilitarised.

“This thing of general titles and all of that. We must go back to the Constitution. Demilitarise the police and ensure the police are given their correct accolades, like commissioner of police like it is prescribed in the Constitution of the land.”

According to Mbalula, aligning police ranks with constitutional requirements will support broader reform efforts aimed at strengthening accountability and professionalism within SAPS.
