The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng will stage a protest outside Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s office on Thursday, intensifying pressure on the provincial government amid the ongoing Tembisa Hospital scandal.

The party is calling for criminal charges to be laid against individuals linked to the alleged R2 billion looting at the embattled facility.

The move follows a damning investigation by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), which identified three syndicates believed to have siphoned funds intended for critical healthcare services.

DA Gauteng Health Spokesperson Jack Bloom said the party wants urgent action to ensure that seized assets are sold swiftly so the recovered funds can be returned to the provincial health department.

“So, we have a list of demands, and the DA is going to be very adamant that Premier Lesufi make sure that we get back the money and that all people are held fully accountable for the massive looting at the Tembisa Hospital while patients suffer,” says Bloom.

According to Bloom, the protest aims to highlight what the party views as slow progress in holding those implicated to account.

He said the DA intends to ensure that the full extent of the looting is exposed and dealt with decisively, particularly as public hospitals continue to face resource constraints.

The party believes that selling off the recovered assets without delay will serve as a meaningful step towards restoring financial stability within the Gauteng Health Department.

The DA maintains that accountability is crucial, especially given the impact the alleged corruption has had on patient care at Tembisa Hospital.
