A viral video from Mbombela has captured the attention of South Africans after a massive python was discovered leisurely exploring the inside of a family home.

Screenshot from Netwerk24 (@netwerk_24) on Instagram

The incident, shared by Netwerk24 and filmed by a resident standing safely outside the window, shows the enormous snake gliding over a windowsill and settling itself comfortably as if it belonged there. The clip has sparked fascination, fear and a flood of reactions across social media.

According to the original post, the reptile entered the Combrink family home and made itself at ease while onlookers kept their distance. Encounters with snakes are not unusual in bushveld areas, but it is rare for such a large python to wander this far into a residential living space. The video has quickly become one of the most shared wildlife moments of the week, reminding locals that nature sometimes comes surprisingly close.

Experts note that Southern African pythons are generally shy and non-venomous, although their size can make encounters intimidating. When a snake enters a house, residents are advised to keep calm, avoid confronting the animal and call authorised snake handlers who can safely relocate it. With rising temperatures and increased summer activity, snakes may explore shaded or cool places such as verandas, garages and homes near bushy areas.

For travellers, this serves as a reminder of the unique and wild character of Mpumalanga. The region remains one of South Africa’s most biodiverse travel destinations, where wildlife sightings extend far beyond game reserves. While a python in the lounge may be more adventure than most bargain for, it highlights the remarkable nature that defines the Lowveld landscape.
