Robyn Johnson, known as one of South African Hockey’s most committed and versatile dual-format internationals, has officially called time on her career representing her country in both indoor and outdoor hockey on Sunday, 16 November 2025.

“Representing South Africa has been the greatest privilege of my life. Every cap, whether indoor or outdoor, has shaped me, challenged me, and given me lifelong memories.”

Johnson made her indoor hockey debut for the Spar South Africa women eight years ago, on 16 November 2017, announcing herself with a superb brace in an 8–1 victory over Zimbabwe, and marked the beginning of an outstanding indoor career, seeing 66 caps, 25 goals, and an extraordinary unbeaten run across her first 33 matches.

A natural competitor, Johnson played a key role in the iconic 2023 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup campaign, where South Africa reached the semi-finals on home soil in Pretoria. The bronze medal match would ultimately be her final appearance in the indoor arena, fittingly closing her chapter on one of the programme’s most historic moments.

In 2019, Johnson became a rare double international when she debuted for the outdoor national team in a 1–0 win against Namibia. She would go on to earn 46 outdoor caps, proudly representing South Africa at the Tokyo Olympic Games, the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and the 2022 FIH Hockey World Cup.

Her reliability, versatility, and consistency across both formats made her incredibly valuable for the teams.

Reflecting on her journey, Johnson said: “I’m grateful to every teammate and coach who walked this journey with me. It’s been eight years of immense pride, and I will carry these moments forever.”

South African Hockey’s Head of High Performance, Reggie Smith, paid tribute to her impact: “Robyn has been a pillar of excellence across both our indoor and outdoor programmes.”

From making her debut with a superb brace to playing on home soil at the 2023 Indoor World Cup, Robyn Johnson’s work ethic and commitment set a benchmark for SA internationals.

“Her work ethic, professionalism, and commitment to the badge have set a benchmark for what it means to be a South African international,” said Smith. “She played a major role in lifting the standards of our teams, and her influence will be felt long after her retirement. We thank her for her incredible contribution to South African Hockey.”

As Robyn Johnson steps away from the international stage, we simply say thank you. Thank you for the hard work, the heart, and the way she always showed up for South African Hockey. She gave everything every time she pulled on the green and gold.
